Most Roller Blind Faults Are a Five-Dollar Part

Roller blinds are the most common blind in Brisbane homes and the most commonly replaced when they did not need to be. The parts that fail — the chain, the clutch, the bracket, the bottom rail — are inexpensive components that clip into a tube the rest of the blind hangs from. When a roller blind stops working, the fabric is usually still perfectly good.

Atlas Blind & Curtain repairs roller blinds across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan and the Redlands. We carry clutches, chains, brackets, pins and bottom rails for the major Australian systems, so a large share of roller repairs are finished during the first visit.

Common Roller Blind Faults We Fix

If your roller blind is doing one of these, it is a repair, not a replacement:

  • Chain has snapped or come off — we refit or replace the chain and check the clutch it runs on, since a broken chain is often a symptom of a worn clutch.
  • Blind slips back down when you let go — the clutch has worn and is no longer holding. Replacing the clutch restores the hold and is a quick job.
  • Blind falls out of its brackets — brackets work loose from the architrave or the pin end has worn. We refit, repack or replace the brackets and re-fix into sound material.
  • Fabric rolls up crooked or telescopes to one side — the blind is out of level or the fabric has been re-rolled incorrectly. We re-level the brackets and re-roll the fabric so it tracks straight.
  • Blind is stiff, noisy or grinding — debris or a failing clutch bearing. We service the mechanism and replace what is worn.
  • Bottom rail bent or end caps missing — we replace the rail and caps so the blind hangs straight and the hem sits flat.
  • Chain is a child-safety risk — we fit a compliant tensioner or cleat so the loose chain is secured out of reach.

Blockout, Sunscreen and Dual Roller Blinds

The mechanism is the same across fabric types, but what fails differs. Blockout fabric is heavier and puts more load on the clutch, so clutches wear sooner on wide blockout blinds. Sunscreen fabric is more open and more prone to fraying at the edges if it has been rubbing on an architrave — which is a tracking problem, and fixing the level usually stops it recurring.

Dual or day-night roller blinds run two blinds on one bracket set, so there are twice as many parts to fail and the brackets carry more weight. We repair both halves and re-balance the set. If you are weighing a replacement, our guides to dual roller blinds and day-night versus double roller explain the difference.

Repair or Replace? Our Honest Rule

If the fabric is sound, repair the mechanism — it is cheaper and faster, and a new clutch on a good blind buys you years. If the fabric is faded, brittle, water-stained or torn, or the blind was cut to the wrong size for the window, the mechanism is not the problem and we will quote a replacement instead. We will tell you which one you are looking at before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace just the chain?

Yes, and often that is the whole job. We will check the clutch at the same time, because a chain that has snapped under load frequently means the clutch is worn too — replacing only the chain would have you calling us again.

Can you fix a motorised roller blind?

Yes. Motor faults, dead batteries, lost remote pairing and failed limit settings are all serviceable. See our blind motor upgrades page, or ask us about retrofitting a motor to an existing blind.

My roller blind fabric has a stain or a tear. Can it be repaired?

Honestly, no — roller fabric cannot be patched invisibly and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can do is re-skin the blind: keep your existing tube, brackets and mechanism and fit new fabric, which costs less than a whole new blind.

How much will the repair cost?

It depends on the type of blind and which parts it needs, so we quote before any work starts. Simple mechanical jobs are quick and low-cost; motor and fabric work costs more. Describe the fault and send a photo and we can give you a guide estimate over the phone.

How quickly can you come out?

We try to fit repairs in quickly, often within a few days. If it is a privacy or security problem — a bedroom blind stuck open, for instance — tell us and we will try to prioritise the visit.

What warranty comes with the repair?

We warranty the parts we supply and our repair labour. We cannot warranty the rest of an older blind, but we make sure the fix itself is solid.

Do you repair blinds you did not supply?

Yes. We repair blinds and curtains regardless of where they were bought. Most use standard components we can source or substitute; proprietary systems usually need manufacturer parts, which we can order in.
